In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume is a story that will definitely satisfy the needs of Blume’s huge following. ![]() The extraordinary events that underpin this highly readable book are based on historical facts: three plane crashes occurred in Blume's home town of Elizabeth, New Jersey, when she was in year eight at high school. ![]() The adults are, in effect, dragging her into their hideout. When the extraordinary events of the novel unfold, Miri is essentially interacting with adults and observing adult responses. But Miri lives with her 33-year-old glamorous, single-parent mother, Rusty, her grandmother Irene and wise Uncle Henry, a former soldier turned journalist. This may seem ironic, as the pivotal character in In the Unlikely Event is a 15-year-old girl, Miri. However, the essential difference between the children's books and her adult books is that the later category is attuned to adult sensibilities. If you don't know the significance of a Volupte compact or shopping at Levy's or Goerke's, then that's your lookout. Her characters are indubitably suburban and as for background, no concessions are made here for non-Americans. On one level her latest, adult novel is not that much different in principle from these children's books. ![]()
